About the Location and Lodgings

Praia do Canal Nature Retreat takes its name from the nearby Praia do Canal (Canal Beach), lying immediately to the south of Arrifana, Canal Beach affords a fine view of Needle Rock.  The Retreat is immersed within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Nature Park, which will be the spectacular backgrop for our experience.  Covering over 100km, the nature reserve is the finest preserved stretch of European coastline, with various unique species of fauna and flora.   The landscape is marked by steep limestone cliffs that have been carved into a series of rugged headlands, featuring stunning beaches, which are highly popular amongst surfers, and are the finest in the country. There is a tremendous variety of beaches, including long stretches of sand and small beaches nestled between the cliffs and rocks. These remarkable geological features have created a variety of distinctive plant and bird habitats.

Aljezur, the closest town, is just 10 kilometers away. Inhabited since prehistoric times, at the end of the Paleolithic period, this village was founded in the 10th century by the Arabs, who are believed to have been the people who occupied this area for the longest time.
